About Knitting Jules Designs

Knitting Jules Designs

Beautiful things knitted in wool, alpaca and cotton, and hand dyed yarn from plants.

My aunt taught me to knit when I was seven. I am left handed and she patiently showed me how to hold the needles and work the yarn in the standard format until eventually I mastered the process by tucking one needle under my arm. I never looked back. In sixth form at school I don't think I owned a sweater that I had not made myself.
The yarn at that time was usually lurid acrylic and scratchy wool, unlike the abundance of the fabulous colours and textures of yarn today.
Making beautiful things from natural yarns gives me such pleasure. I prefer wool and alpaca which are so much kinder to the environment. Wool is an amazing product, it wears well, if stored and washed properly will last a lifetime. It keeps its shape, has great insulation properties but also breathes, it is naturally flame retardant, can be sourced locally and is sustainable. It also absorbs dye well offering a myriad of shades to choose from and I love working with it.
When designing my life like birds, I watch them in the natural environment. I carefully match the colour and texture of the yarn, then I knit the pattern recording and mapping a graph, making several prototypes before I am happy. I invisibly stitch the seams then felt it to give a prefect finish.
I also dye yarn from plants grown in my Victorian walled garden and foraged locally, in soft gentle colours which I use in my products and sell.

This is the 4th knitting kit that I've bought from Julie and I've loved them all. Julie's patterns are well written and the yarns are all high quality....they are a joy to knit. As an added bonus, Julie includes a little homemade, recycled bag to keep the yarn in. Thank you. X

I bought this item for two reasons. One, to knit something with Shetland wool using a wide range of colours, and two, to make a hat using a range of small traditional patterns. My mission accomplished with full marks. I was also amazed how much yarn was left on completion, having first thought there simply wouldn't be sufficient. Excellent pattern, very clear and a lovely warm hat as a result. Highly recommend. Top marks.
