Item details

Mystery has always surrounded Stonehenge. Perhaps one of the most interesting and unequivocal theories is that the ancient monument was used as a time-keeping device, measuring the winter and summer solstices for ancient societies to plan, plant, sow and celebrate. It has also become a symbolical time device too.
In Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy sacrifices Tess at Stonehenge to show the dying embers of an agricultural life against the growth of modern city life, as farm workers move to the city along with the development of the railway. Hardy, ever the evolutionist, shows the decay of one society through Tess as she lies dying upon the altar stone of the monument.
However even today, Stonehenge continues to be a time portal as people gather to celebrate the visual time rituals of the past at both summer and winter solstices.
