Item details

These sea forts are to be found sitting at the mouth of the Thames Estuary. They were built during the 2nd world war to protect London from air attacks via the Thames.

In the1960’s the forts were used by pirate radio broadcasters including Radio City managed by one Reg Calvert who was shot in a scuffle about the forts ownership and the first death associated with the radio pirates. This spurred the Government into legislative action shutting down offshore pirate radio stations, passing the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act.

These magnificent towers today sit comfortably with a forest of wind turbines along the Kent coast near Whitstable.
